Health authorities have warned of a spike in men taking Viagra as the drug’s patent on the drug has expired. FDA spokeswomanrequencyarah Todague said the drug is still on sale, but Pfizer Inc.’s patent on the drug expires in April 2025.
Viagra is Pfizer’s top-selling drug, valued at nearly $2 billion last year, Todague told the Journal-Constitution. It has become well-known that the drug could be a lifeline for hundreds of thousands of men with heart-related issues. And there’s concern that it could cause death in rare cases. The FDA also issued a warning about the drug’s potential to increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.
The FDA is requiring people taking Viagra to talk to a doctor about its safety and efficacy. A similar warning was issued in April by the European Medicines Agency and in a letter from doctors in the United States and Canada.
“We don’t know enough about the safety of Viagra to advise people of the risks to them,” Todague said. “Our FDA is committed to patient safety.”
Viagra, which Pfizer’s patent on Viagra expired in April, has been on the market since April, and its price has soared. It can cost between $2 and $3 a pill, depending on the drug and the pharmacy, said Todague.
Patients taking Viagra should not take their pills to an out-of-pocket price, she said. They should also consult their doctor before taking the pill.
Viagra comes as a result of a lawsuit filed by plaintiffs, who claim Pfizer’s Viagra is the cause of their erectile dysfunction. The plaintiff claims that Pfizer failed to adequately warn men of the risks, including possible heart-related effects, which can lead to stroke and heart attack. Plaintiffs also say Pfizer improperly marketed Viagra, which is the generic version of the drug. The plaintiffs claim Pfizer’s patent expired, which led to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. They also claim Pfizer withheld safety information from doctors, which can prevent men from taking Viagra.
Todague said the plaintiffs are not asking the Food and Drug Administration for comment on future lawsuits.
Viagra has been a popular treatment for heart disease since its introduction in the late 1990s. A found that men who took Viagra were three times more likely to die of heart disease, compared with men who did not take the drug. The FDA is also investigating other heart-related causes of death.
The Viagra patent expired in April 2025, Todague said. The FDA’s warning came several days after Pfizer filed a new drug application with the FDA seeking to sell a generic version of Viagra. The application sought approval from the Food and Drug Administration. The application, which is scheduled to take effect in June, could also affect other Pfizer drugs. The generic version of Viagra is expected to sell for as much as $2 billion.
Todague said the FDA’s warning was based on a review of Viagra’s side-effects. It did not include safety information. She said the FDA will keep a close eye on the number of Viagra users who use the drug and on how they use the drug. She also said the FDA’s review of the literature and other health records from patients who take the drug is ongoing. Todague added that the FDA will monitor whether patients are using Viagra or another drug that can raise Viagra prices.
Viagra has been one of the most popular drugs on the market, with more than $2 billion in sales in 2013, according to IMS Health. But some men who use the drug say they have concerns about Viagra’s safety.
Viagra is the drug’s second-biggest selling drug, with nearly $800 million in sales last year, according to IMS. Pfizer Inc.’s patent on Viagra expired in April 2025. The patent on Viagra, which expires in May 2025, is also a result of the lawsuit. Pfizer said it will soon have more information about the Viagra patents.
Todague said Pfizer has not issued a warning about Viagra’s potential to increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. But she said Pfizer did not take the warning seriously enough.
